Owl Moon... a fun project about owls! 12/2009

During the week before winter break we had lots of fun using our classroom library books to study fun topics. We read "Owl Moon" by Jane Yolen and used her artistic style of watercolors to paint our own owls. We also used crayola resist to add more details. We hung them in the hall at school and got lots of compliments on our work. We studied owls and then created an owl that we could make hoot by pulling wet fingers down the string (I hope all of you parents appreciated the noise... just imagine 18 at once!!). We also revisited what we previously learned about sound being made by vibrations. We learned how to make a straw squawk like a bird and discovered that different lengths of the straw would change the sound produced. What a noisy day in 1st grade!
