BACK TO SCHOOL!!

As many of you know, I have gone back to school to earn a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. I will try to keep the blog as current as possible but most of my evenings are spent working on my class work. I am still taking pictures and will get them posted as time permits! I know the children love to see themselves and what we have done at school. I hope the parents enjoy it as well.

2nd Semester!

Week have finished the first semester of first grade! I am very proud of everyone's progress so far. The second half of the year will be spent preparing your children for second grade. This means higher expectations in all areas... behavior, work ethics, penmanship, reading fluency, and mastering math! I will not be providing as much assistance when completing assignments... the children need to become more independent and complete assignments on their own. Their grades may drop a little initially but then should return to their normal level as they adjust to being more independent. I know they can do it!! Please feel free to schedule a conference if you have any concerns about your child's progress.

Short Week!

This was a neat experiment we did to separate colors. I had more pictures but somehow deleted them by accident! CC used a brown marker and had various colors that bled out of it when he got the coffee filter wet.

If you can tell me what colors we saw from the black markers and why you can pick from the treat box.

Happy Birthday, LM!

LM celebrated her birthday!

Mixing colors. 1/11/10

We have been studying colors and how a rainbow is made. Today we mixed drops of colors to make new colors just like the color wheel. If you can tell me the colors of a rainbow in order, you can pick out of the treat box! Remember ROY G BIV.

Just right for snow! 1/8/10

It has been soooo cold that we haven't been able to go out to play. Everyone wanted it to snow today but no such luck! However, we had snow anyway!! After we finished our lessons for the day, we invited the other first grade over and we read a book called "Axel Annie." It was about a school bus driver that always got her children to school... even during terrible snow storms. They never got to have snow days off from school. We don't either since it doesn't snow here! Earlier in the day we read some books about snow and how it forms. When the book was over we went to our tables with partners from the other class and made our own snow. It was so much fun to see the small amount of white powder turn into a cup full of snow instantly! We had a great time playing with it and then took it home to show our families.

Snow fun!

The snow was not cold or wet like real snow. It is actually the same type of filling used in baby diapers. This grossed them out until I reassured them their powder did not come out of a baby's diaper!

Fun snow to play with.

That is amazing!

This group is pouring in the water and watching their snow appear like magic!

Wow! That is so cool.

This is fun!

Here comes the snow.

Shadow Fun! 1/7/2010

Happy New Years everyone and welcome to 2010!
This week we were reading books about shadows so we had some fun making our own shadows. We also took pictures outside of our shadows made by the sun. We turned those pictures into our very own shadow book titled "Guess Whose Shadow!" We had a lot of fun and the children are enjoying reading it at the reading center.

The Christmas Play 12/17/09

We enjoyed making (and eating!) reindeer cookies. This was our treat for working so hard and doing such a great job during our Christmas play today. I hope everyone got to enjoy watching their child perform... they were truly amazing!

What a cute bunch of elves... and I am not the least bit prejudiced!
