VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
HELP... I need a few extra hands to help with some experiments on Friday. Mrs. Moses is going to be out with sick children so Mrs. Thompson will be filling in for her. If you have a little free time I could use some help at 12:30 PM to help children get into their costumes and do our experiments before the costume parade. We will party after the parade so I could use help then as well. Thanks in advance... I know someone will come through!!
Turn your back on drugs!
Here we are ready to turn our backs on drugs! If you click on the picture to make it bigger you can see our inside out and backwards clothes! Everyone still has their red ribbons, too!!

Red Ribbon Week... We are DRUG FREE!
This week is Red Ribbon Week and each day the children can have fun dressing to help remind us that we can have fun and be DRUG FREE! I forgot my camera at home so I didn't get any pictures of the children "shading out drugs" with their hats and sunglasses. Check tomorrow for pictures of children "turning their backs on drugs!"
Fall Conferences 1-/26/09
Thanks to all of the parents that were able to make it for their child's conference. If you were not able to make it, please reschedule... we must meet within the week. Thanks again for all that you do as parents and for being your child's first teacher!
Last Week 10/19-23/09
As most of you know, I was out of the classroom last week assisting in the office. I enjoyed it but missed my "chickies" as well! I think they missed me, too (I hope!). I do not have any pictures but will try to make up for it this week!
Happy Birthday, JMC 10/16/09
Garden trip 10/16/09
We visited the community garden again today. We had a lot of weeding to do before we could plant our new plants and seeds. We divided the garden into fourths and each group got busy!! I believe the girls in my class won... they worked very hard. The boys worked hard as well but I believe Mrs. Ward worked the hardest!! I'm not sure who won from Mrs. Moses' class... boys or girls. In the end, the garden was clean and the new plants were in the ground and ready to grow. Ride by and check on it when you get a chance. Feel free to water it while you are there since we only get to go check on it every few weeks. It looked like it might rain any minute so we made a quick trip back to school. We made it without getting wet!! At least it was cool.

Thanks, Mrs. Johnson, for helping the girls with their weeding.

A week of leaning! 10/15/09
JM enjoys working while sprawled on the floor. Seminoles and Tigers are working on subtraction by counting back
she gets it right! Good job, KG.
SH staying focused and getting his subtraction correct!
NE working at the table... using a number line to subtract.
BS helping CA figure it out.
Eagles learned to count pennies and dimes today. They
decided they would much rather have dimes because you
can buy more! We practiced counting by 10's and 1's. We
have also been working on telling time to the hour and
half hour. We are focusing on getting the hour hand half
way between the two numbers when it is half past the hour.
Mrs. Terhune has been helping out this week
while Mrs. Thompson is out of town. This group is reading about teamwork and our sound focus has been final blends -nd, -nt, -nk, and -st. I hope everyone is ready for their spelling test tomorrow! Our words are already getting harder.
BL and KN are partner reading their story. This group's
unit theme has been about being afraid. Then boy in our
story this week is afraid of the dark! We have had fun
learning what everyone is afraid of. Mrs. Ward used
to be afraid of the dark when she was little!
GT, AJ, and CC reading their story.

no telling how many years it had been down there!
Smokey Bear Visits ABC School 10/8/09
October is Fire Safety month so we spent some time talking about fire safety. We also made fire engines as an art project. Finally, the best part of fire prevention month... a visit from Smokey Bear. We went to the library and Mr. Taranto from the forestry division gave a brief talk about fire safety in the forest. Then Miss Odessa read us the true story of Smokey Bear. Look at how well behaved we are as we listen to the speaker! The kids really enjoyed the presentation.

Mr. Taranto explains forestry fire safety to the whole 1st grade. We also learned about controlled burns and what Smokey's 4 fire rules are. See if your child can remember them!
he rambled into the room for an up close visit!

Making flubber! 10/5/09
What a great day we had making flubber. It was really cool to mix different liquids and have them turn into such cool, rubbery flubber! A little glue, water, and borax (and coloring of choice) and it's like magic.... stretchy, cold, rubbery flubber.

Getting ready to add the Borax and water mixture so the molecules
will stick together and make flubber.
